The annual dsmHack‘s Des Moines Charity Hackathon was held Sept. 20 and 21 bringing together technology professionals from across Iowa to help local nonprofits overcome critical challenges, a news release said. The event aims to foster innovation, community engagement and positive social impact through technology. The four nonprofits teams helped this year were:

  • Iowa Bird Rehabilitation: This nonprofit is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing wild birds. Their team developed upgraded rescue tools to streamline communication with volunteers, ensuring faster rescues and better data management.
  • Neighborhood Finance Corp.: Hackers created an innovative mapping tool designed to connect Iowans with lending programs and related services to support neighborhood revitalization efforts in Polk County and Cedar Rapids.
  • Foster Squad: To expand Operation Santa from a local initiative to a statewide program, this team built tools that match donors with foster families.
  • Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice: This nonprofit is focused on delivering high-quality legal services to immigrants and refugees while increasing opportunities for advocacy and community engagement. Iowa MMJ’s team designed an accessible, multilingual website to streamline access to critical information for Iowa’s diverse communities.
