Four Central Iowa student teams advance to robotics world championship in Houston

Four Central Iowa student robotics teams are heading to the FIRST World Championship in Houston this weekend. The teams are from Waukee, Des Moines, Ames and Urbandale. Through FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), students design, build and program robots under real-world constraints, developing skills in mechanical design, software, problem solving and collaboration. The program offers students an early pathway into engineering, manufacturing, and technology careers. The FIRST teams are supported by nearly 20 John Deere employee mentors who volunteer their time to coach students. The mentors are part of John Deere’s multi-year partnership with the global STEM nonprofit, which also includes a three-year, $2.7 million grant.
