New initiative turning used electronics into funding for nonprofits

SmartphonesPLUS, a Hiawatha-based electronics resale business, in partnership with An Enduring Legacy, a Mount Vernon-based business that works with individuals and corporations to design and implement philanthropic initiatives, has announced the launch of Tech for Good, a new initiative designed to transform used electronics into funding for nonprofit organizations. The initiative is leveraging SmartphonesPLUS’ device recycling process to allow organizations and individuals to donate the value of their devices to a featured nonprofit each month, according to a press release. “Every day, we work with companies and individuals who have valuable technology sitting unused,” said Chris Hale, founder and CEO of SmartphonesPLUS, in a prepared statement. “We saw an opportunity to do more than just recover value – to create a simple, meaningful way for people to give back.”  Accepted electronics include smartphones, tablets, laptops and watches. As the inaugural partner, Breakthrough T1D will receive proceeds generated throughout May to support its mission of advancing research, improving care and accelerating progress toward a cure for Type 1 diabetes.
