Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller announced Dec. 30 three consumer protection priorities the office will pursue in 2022, including investigating the effects of Facebook’s algorithms on consumers. Miller said at the press conference that it’s important to address consumer protection in Big Tech because of technology’s “incredibly important place in our lives today.”

“So much of what we deal with in consumer protection has to do with technology,” he said. “Technology provides amazing consumer products, but it also provides some issues and concerns that it really makes sense [to look] at.” The other priorities for Miller’s office throughout the year are developing an early warning system for consumers to protect against “fundamental frauds” like Social Security or IRS fraud schemes and pursuing solutions to telemarketing fraud. The measures are part of Miller’s presidential initiative as the recently elected president of the National Association of Attorneys General. He will partner with attorneys general from across the country on the initiative.
